In Memoriam
SAMUEL BROCKWELL
1945-2026

Durham, NC — Samuel Brockwell, of Durham, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Duke Regional Hospital, surrounded by the family he loved so deeply.

Sam was born in Durham to the late Helen Williams Brockwell and Sterling Monroe Brockwell, Sr. He was preceded in death by his brother, Sterling Monroe Brockwell, Jr. Though his accomplishments were many, what mattered most to him were the people in his life and the community he called home.

A proud Eagle Scout, Sam carried that same sense of integrity, curiosity, and quiet determination throughout his life. He graduated from North Carolina State University’s School of Design in 1968 with a degree in architecture, beginning a career that would span decades and leave a lasting mark far beyond what can be seen on paper. Early in his career, he worked in Durham and later in Taunton, Massachusetts, before returning home for good—because Durham was always where his heart was.

In 1978, Sam founded Brockwell Associates, Inc., building not just a successful firm, but a body of work that reflected his dedication to thoughtful, enduring design. His projects reached across 36 states, but some of his proudest contributions were right here at home. He especially cherished his work with Duke University, where he was involved in upgrades to Cameron Indoor Stadium, including helping to modernize the space for broadcast and comfort. He loved being able to say he had a hand in something so iconic, and he carried that pride with him.

But Sam was far more than his profession. He was a steady, grounding presence—someone who showed up, did the work, and cared deeply without needing recognition. He had a way of making people feel comfortable and supported, whether through a conversation, a shared laugh, or simply by being there when it mattered.

Sam also gave his time and leadership to organizations he believed in, serving on the board of the Aubrey Brooks Scholarship Foundation, as a deacon at Watts Street Baptist Church, and as a former board member of Croasdaile Country Club. Still, those closest to him will remember not the titles he held, but the way he lived—with humility, loyalty, and quiet strength.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Dede; his son, Brian Brockwell; his daughter, Lee Brockwell; his brothers, Benjamin (Tillie) Brockwell and Dr. Charles (Anne) Brockwell; his sister-in-law, Carolyn Downey Brockwell; and many dear friends and extended family who were an important part of his full and meaningful life.

Sam's life is reflected not only in the buildings he designed, but in the love he gave and the family he raised. He will be deeply missed and always remembered.

A private service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Watts Street Baptist Church, 800 Watts Street, Durham, NC 27701, or to APS of Durham.
