Ralph F. ‘Buddy’ Whitfield, Jr., 79, died Saturday at Duke Hospital. A lifelong Durham resident, he was born January 11, 1931 to Ralph F. and Mary Mathews Whitfield. Buddy attended Watts Street Elementary School, Durham High School and was a graduate of Duke University. He began his real estate career in the mid 1950’s and eventually founded Buddy Whitfield Real Estate. Buddy was a 50-plus year member of the Durham Board of Realtors and a past president. He was an avid golfer and held the distinction of shooting his age many times, along with claiming several holes in one. He was a member of Croasdaile Country Club. Buddy Whitfield was charismatic, generous, and devoted to his community, family and friends.
Surviving are his wife, Doris M. Whitfield; his children, Ralph F. Whitfield, III and his wife, Lisa of Raleigh; David Whitfield and his wife, Teri of Suwanee, GA and Jan Whitfield of Nashville, TN; a sister, Peggy W. Gregory of Durham; and a step grandson, Michael Deets. He was predeceased by his sister, Joyce W. Dortch. A private graveside funeral will be Tuesday in Maplewood Cemetery, with the Rev. Hope Vickers officiating. The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
