JULIAN G. OLIVE
1933-2002

 


Mr. Julian G. Olive, age 69, of 2634 Pickett Rd, Durham NC, passed on to be with his eternal family on Friday, May 3, 2002, after a period of declining health. Mr. Olive was born in Durham on August 13, 1933. He was the youngest of six children born to B. Ray Olive and Virginia Wood Olive. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Martha Paschall Olive; a daughter, Martha Loren Olive; and a son, David Paschall Olive and wife, Anne Olive, and grandchildren, Alex and Cody. His son Julian Gray Olive Jr. predeceased him in 1996. Mr. Olive also is survived by three sisters, Betsy Ann Olive of Wilmington, Charlotte Olive Hallberg of Rock Hill, S.C., and Patsy Olive Payne of Matthews; one brother, Billy B. Olive of Durham; and numerous nieces and nephews. His oldest brother, John Worth Olive, died in January of this year.

Mr. Olive was educated in the Durham schools and graduated from Duke University School of Engineering in 1956. He was widely respected as a professional engineer specializing in heating and air conditioning systems. He was a principal in the firm of Thomas & Olive, Consulting Engineers, for over 20 years. For many years, Mr. Olive was active at First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and loved his involvement with college students, scouts and youth program. He was active in ASHRAE, the Durham Engineers Club, Toast Masters, and the Heart Association.

The most cherished time in Mr. Olive's life was the last 12 years, where his focus was on a more spiritual path helping mankind and enjoying all of God's blessings. His friends came from every walk of life. Those who knew him thought of Mr. Olive as a person whose constant desire was to help others and whose good deeds brought about lifelong friendships.

A celebration of Mr. Olive's life was held Tuesday morning, May 7, 2002, at 11:00 in the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel. Officiating was the Rev. Roy Lowder. Following the service, a reception was be held at the home of Bruce and Kathryn Olive.

The family received friends Monday night from 6 until 8 o'clock at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home.
