In Memoriam James Ernest Sunderland 1919-2008 Mildred J. Sunderland 1927-2007 |
ERNEST SUNDERLAND Passed away peacefully late Sunday, June 29, 2008, with his family close by, in Thousand Oaks, California. Ernie was born on August 5, 1919 in Winfield, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Millie; two sons, Cal and Don; and siblings, Frank, Mable, Earl, Lewis and Dick. He is survived by his children, Bob, Joe, Jeanne, Jill and Jan and their spouses; 19 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
His childhood was spent on his family's farm in Kansas. Searching for better opportunities, while in his early twenties, he moved to Los Angeles on Pearl Harbor day 1941, he found exactly what he was looking for when he met his future wife, Millie, at a church function. A few years later, he enlisted in the Navy, where he proudly served in World War II. Ernie and Millie lived in the San Fernando Valley together for over 50 years, raising their seven children. He held several civil service positions, and retired after more than 30 years of service with the DWP. He spent his most recent years serving as a docent for the Reagan Library, involving himself in church activities, and spending time with his family. He touched the lives of countless individuals with his family centered values, religious devotion and zeal for life.
We would also like to thank the wonderful people at Livingston Hospice, especially Theresa and Sylvia, who took such wonderful care of him. We invite everyone who knew and loved Ernie to come and celebrate his life with us at 3:00 p.m., on July 12, 2008, at Bethany Church, 200 W. Bethany Ct., Thousand Oaks. Pastor Dan Borg will be officiating. CRAWFORD MORTUARY Directors (818) 349-9701 Published in the Los Angeles Daily News on 7/8/2008
