Adeline Lois Nordheim
1929-2017

Adeline Lois (Gunderson) Nordheim, 88 of Fertile, MN, died on Thursday, December 21, 2017, at Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile, MN. Adeline was born to Casper and Laura (Dvergsten) Gunderson April 8th, 1929 near Cummings, ND. She was the oldest of her siblings, with four brothers, Arnold, Orville, Lawrence, and Donald. She started school in Hillsboro, ND, and transferred to a country school near there. She completed elementary through junior high school in Buxton, ND. She attended Caledonia High School for one year before completing her last school years at Fertile High School. She lived in Beltrami, MN as a teenager with her family. Following graduation, she met her future husband, Ted (C.T.) Nordheim, when he came to do electrical wiring at her parent’s home. Ted, son of Clara (Sundet) Nordheim and Theodore Nordheim, served in the Navy during WWII, and following his honorable discharge, completed schooling in Chicago to become a licensed electrician. They were married at Maple Bay Free Lutheran Church on April 8th, 1950. Addy and Ted lived in Fertile all their married life where they raised five children. Ted ran Nordheim Electric on the weekdays and Nordheim Photography on the weekends. Addy worked alongside Ted with the photography business. She also sold Sarah Coventry Jewelry at home parties and went door to door for eleven years selling Avon in the community.

Addy and Ted delighted in traveling. They made trips to Oregon to visit Cyndy and her family; an extended family trip to Banff, Canada; a tour of all the Western States; a motorhome trip to Alaska, and a tour of the Holy Land with their pastor and friends from Fertile. Addy enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and sewing, to provide her three daughters with dresses for special occasions, including proms, bridesmaid dresses and two wedding dresses. She was known as a wonderful cook and often brought gifts of baked goods to friends and neighbors. She always had the coffee pot on with “goodies” for those who dropped by the house; friends, family, customers and business associates. Much of Addy and Ted’s community life centered around being active members of Concordia Lutheran Church. Addy dedicated her time to involvement with the women’s circle, service groups and quilting with the church women. For many years she provided pies and rhubarb torte for the Concordia church stand and was known for making caramel rolls for Sunday morning coffee. Together they chaperoned a church youth trip to Dallas, Texas, as well as a band trip to Thompson, Manitoba and were involved with Teens Encounter Christ (TEC).

In 2005, Ted and Addy celebrated 55 years together before he passed away on Oct. 2nd. In 2014 Addy and her children gathered to prepare for an auction sale at their family home, purchased in 1956. They shared numerous laughs and "Addy-isms" as well as a few tears as they sorted and reminisced. Four generations of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren from across the country came home to Fertile for the auction in September to reflect on family times, and create new memories. At the center of it all, “Sweet Adeline”. Addy lived her last years at Fair Meadow Nursing Home. In August 2016 she was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. This past year has shown what a strong woman Addy was, as she endured chemotherapy, radiation and multiple hospitalizations with courage and grace. We are grateful for the caring and compassion she received from the nursing home staff, her oncologist, Dr. Anil Potti, her primary physician, Dr. Bruce Ring, and Elizabeth Ring, PA.

Addy is survived by her five children, Cynthia (Richard) Alsos, Washougal, WA; Susan (Mark) Lindberg, Fertile, MN; Terry (Cathy) Nordheim, Marine on St. Croix, MN; Holly (Wade) Dutton, Detroit Lakes, MN; and James (Christa) Nordheim, Duluth, MN; eleven grandchildren: Jeff and John Truhn, Heather (Dennis) Qualley, Mike (Brandy) Lindberg, Angela (Lee) Rudie, Dan (Jane Kilmer) Nordheim, Laura (Matt) Schleede, Kelsey and Bryce Dutton, Clara and Isaac Nordheim; ten great-grandchildren, Jorgen, Kamryn, Levi, and Mariah Qualley, Jakob and Emilee Rudie, Grayson Jones, Lily and Elise Schleede, and Adeline Kilmer-Nordheim. She is also survived by two brothers, Arnold and Orville (Donna) Gunderson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; her parents, Casper and Laura Gunderson; a sister, Marjorie; brothers, Donald and Lawrence Gunderson; and brother and sister-in-law, Ivan and Orpha Nordheim.
